I'm doing what I love...

Today part of my story is featured on Beth Nicholl's blog 'Do what you Love'. Beth inspired me with some thought provoking questions about my passion + my creativity. Pop on over for a read where you'll get some insight into how I feel about this amazing, yet challenging artistic journey. I'm in good company with an interview from Sarah Early, stationary designer and Monique Halley journal maker.

Huge thanks to Beth for sharing her space...

small stuff is important!

I was browsing through some mags at the newsagent and found a copy of Cloth Paper Scissors. I had a delightful flip through the pages and came to a grinding halt when I saw one of my art pieces on this page from an article I wrote some time ago...I wanted to do a little jump in the air and share it with some body. Alas.... there was no one standing next to me for me to say 'Hey Look, this is my art...." I bought the magzine home and showed my family. And did my happy dance.

Its the small rewarding, encouragement along the way that really does make a huge difference. Make it count I say, even the small stuff! Its all important.

Nic Hohn + Etsy Treasury List

One of my winged hearts has made it to a Treasury list curated by Ronti. Honestly I don't know a lot about how these work, but I have read that the list only lasts for 2 days. I clicked away with my camera to capture the moment.

Celebrate this short but sweet moment I say!

Home Beautiful ~ April 2010!

Painting "Here I Am" featured in Home Beautiful pg 80

Here I am indeed! a painting I created a few years ago was purchased by Karen, a darling lady from Brissie. She gifted this colourful painting to her sister for her 40th birthday. I heard that she was totally delighted! and the painting headed to Sydney to its new home, where renovations where taking place. Not so long ago I received an email from Karen to say the renos where complete and that the home was going to be featured in a home magazine and as "Here I Am" was the inspiration for the colours and decorating in the main bedroom, it too was gracing the pages.

The insert above reads..
"Helen has chosen a restful taupe shade for her bedroom walls, but there is still plenty of colour in vibrant cushions, custom made in Thai silk, and a pair of quirky lamps....On the opposite wall is one of Helen's prized possessions, a painting by Nicole Hohn, commissioned for her 40th birthday"
Its a great article with many pics that truly celebrates colour. So glad you love this painting Helen, and it was honestly one of the most vibrant paintings I've ever created!

today my inner critic dies!

This morning I woke from a profound and lasting dream. When I have those sort of dreams I am aware there is a deeper meaning in there somewhere, and it usually is about the coming day.......after checking my emails and doing a few quick blog reads before I took the kids to school I got a huge wake up call....and it was from my inner critic."Well you really stuffed that one up" and I started to agree, until another side of me came in with "Hang on a minute, there is a thousand reasons why this could have happened, its not always about me". That's when I realised just how much my ego self criticise....and it was in that moment I became aware that I have to stop it.Now. So with much determination I am laying my critic to rest today, burning ashes into the enthral and letting go by becoming conscious of my thoughts. And sending the negative talk back with love. Choosing more affirming ones.....I'll let you know how the funeral goes.

Aside from that I have been creating. I have been most inspired by DJ's beautiful textile books and although I didn't take this class with her I felt I could give it a go. I'm always telling my children to do that! This is work in progress. I'm kind of making it up as I go along.

I wanted to create a really special book that I can look through daily and really feel the decedent textures. I have a volume of personal affirmations that have come to me whilst mediating/visualizing, they have real significance to my core so I wanted to honour them by putting them in a special book with images and textures. Rather than a scrap of paper they are currently on.

And here is my article in the recent Cloth Paper Scissors, March /April about journaling. There are also some more pages on the online extras here to check out. The article is about taking an image and transforming it into many different identities....below is an image at the back of the magazine for your use to journal with. Use it in many different ways you can think of...and if you would like to email me with your journal page I'll post it on my blog.

If you are posting this image on your own blog in a journal page, I ask for the usually courtesy of acknowledgement. Thank you.

And finally I have 2 blank journals left, with about 60 pages in them. The front cover is a combination of print and original artwork. You can check out more details at my website.

the heart charka of the world

Happy Australia Day everyone! Hope your celebrating in 'fine' style. Recently I learnt that Australia was the heart charka of the world. I think that is pretty neat! and was the inspiration for my image. We have been to the beach this morning for a swim, and having a quiet day before school returns tomorrow. The boys in the house are gearing up to watch the cricket this arvo.

And speaking of Aussies how cool is this edition of CPS? Featuring an Australian artist's work on the front. Totally beautiful..Elizabeth Armstrong

And I have finally seen my article and Tea Party collage in print. It has taken a little while to get to me, but it was worth the wait. I also made the front page...in words. So I'm feeling inspired to take my own advice and do some journal pages about some goals I've set for myself this year. Great time of year to do it.

One last Aussie message...Ausie Aussie Aussie Oi Oi Oi!!!

celebrate!

< align="center"> celebrate!

I do have reason to celebrate! And I so want to share my excitement...... This mixed media artwork was accepted for a Tea Party Challenge for CPS and published in this edition Jan/Feb 09. I haven't received my copy yet, although I have been waiting ever so patiently for the mail to arrive. (Not going to be today with a public holiday!)

In the same edition of CPS, I have an article published..... 'Action is the art of Doing'. It's about using journal pages to move forward. Hope you get something out of the articile that makes a difference to your creative journey. And a great reminder to me to continue journalling and to listen to my own words.

One more reason to celebrate! I'm off to Creative Soul Retreat in Melbourne in March .I felt a compulsion to make the decision to go. And whilst I'm so excited to be going, I am not a seasoned traveller by any means and have never taken flight on my own.. only once been on a plane, and that was for a high school trip. I know it sounds a bit lame, but there you have it. Fear and excitement all rolled into one. I know this trip is worth it. Bernie Berlin, Stephanie Lee and DJ Pettitt. Just putting all those names together in a sentence, blows me away! And I can't wait to meet all the amazing artist who are attending. It will be a wonderful stretch for me on many levels.

acceptance

wow has this week gone fast....I almost forgot to let you know that a mixed media piece I submitted to CPS has been AccEpTEd! for publication.

A Tea Party theme. Above is a snippet of my collage! (I don't know how that slipped by). Oh yes I do!! I think between being an artist, wife and mother, my brain and the rest of me gets pulled into lots of different directions. On some days it feels like it is all at the same time. Anyway my collage was accepted out of 160 entries, so I'm planning a celebration. Maybe a glass of champagne rather than tea though......

IT'S ARRIVED!

Well Cloth Paper Scissors is out on the new stands in the States....and I have my Soul Clothes article published in it! Hoparray! I received my copy last week and subscribers also had their copies a little earlier. Australians will have to wait sometime until it reaches the newsagents. It was certainly a step out side my comfort zone, I am feeling proud of myself. It's time for me to be ok with what I am achieving and my successes. I have always played down my achievements in the past, so I'm finding that even writing about it somewhat challenging. But I so love to share....There is 4 pages in my article, featuring 3 artworks with a 'how to article'.

When I received my package from the States, it felt like I was opening the results of an exam...I carefully opened it and sat down with a cup of tea. Oh the anticipation of seeing it in print. I read it and then danced around the room. I wanted to share with someone so I ran up the street to my new neighbour friend and flung a copy into her arms when she opened the door....

I have created some artworks on paper, with the technique I have written about . They are available for sale on my Etsy site. Here is to being brave and being rewarded!

FEELING VERY HONOURED

Today I'm feeling very honoured and humbled, yesterday was such a great day on many levels. The exhibition was successful...thank you to all those who came. Some fantastic artworks to view and still a good number of days to see the rest of the exhibition and sale pieces. Big thanks to Anna and Kym who helped make this possible. My other delight yesterday was a full page article in the local paper The Chronicle. I had been waiting to see if it was going to be published in Tuesdays paper in the Diva section. So you can imagine my surprise when it showed up in Saturdays...especially on Carnival of Flowers weekend. Could possibly be one of the most purchased papers for the whole year as it has all the Carnival information for the tourists to read.....so you may understand how I'm feeling, very grateful. And according to the article I am Toowoomba's secret no more....look out world here I come!

My Belle Armoire Jewelry

Exciting News!!! A magazine arrived today in my mail box... Belle Armoire Jewelry.... with my article in it! (I also took the photo). I have to tell you, I was just a bit scared opening the parcel when it arrived. Feelings like getting the results from a 3 hour exam. Can't do anything about because it is already all done...but the fear of 'what if'. Once I was beyond that (and ripping the packaging off certainly helped) I felt pleased with the article and gave myself a pat on the back.... Maybe the first of many to come. I feel very honoured to have been published in an American magazine.

Here is the green flower necklace that inspired me to write the article.

This one is in red and features more wire work, more beads and buttons. Quite dynamic and is for sale at my etsy boutique. The green heart below is also for sale if you would like anymore details please email me.

Big thanks to Violette for encouraging me to approach Belle Armoire. It was certainly worth stepping outside my comfort zone. Thank you sweet thing!

The Heart of an Artist.

This is the front cover of a local magazine I have just been featured in The Alchemy of Light.... and below is the first page. How exciting. A great magazine that has all sorts of products and services that are related to Self. These photos were taken some time ago and I'd almost forgotten about the magazine...is that possible? Its is quite surreal to see one of my 'girls' on the front page. But one that brings me great joy.

If anyone is interested in having a read or look (at the pictures, which is the first thing I do!) please email Awake, and Carolyn will send one on, even if you are overseas!
The unexpected can be the most rewarding!

I'm a Published Illustrator!

Ashtara's Astrology Books are now hot off the press... as are my illustrations! Yippee.Ashtara is a recognised international astrologer and writer. What an honour and a privilege to have created these drawings for Ashtara. I was able to create a drawing for each Zodiac sign and one drawing for the Planet book.

This is the front of the two books, and can be checked out further at Ashtara's website. The Zodiacal sign book is $35 AUD ( about $27 US) and the Planet book is $50 ( about $38US) and can be posted overseas if you are interested. Some great teachings and lessons are held within both of these books.

This is a close up drawing of Taurus, one of my personal favourites.... and is a left handed drawing, based on similar principles to my Wise Women series.

I did a seminar with Ashtara on the weekend "The Secrets of the Oracle", were we looked at Astrology and Tarot as tools to learn more about ourselves. Great and interesting knowledge for more personal growth....It was interesting, I felt a little nervous on the way to the seminar, a bit unsure what I might discover about myself, I guess this is what others feel when they come to "Aha " Seminars and Workshops that I facilitate. It felt strange being on the other side. However fears aside, it was fun and did unearth some great stuff about myself and my art! I discovered why I use some of the imagery in my artwork. The flying heart was on one of the cards that I "unknowing" chose to work with on the day, and I now know it has special significance. Art certainly reflects life, and life reflects art...no doubt.

"I express my feelings to Heal and Grow."
